Imagine a bright tropical house, that is comfortable with shade. Shading devices like louvers is often used as secondary skin. Secondary skin concept for tropical houses has become popular Lately. This concept blends with modern architecture concept by complementing a considerable solution to deal with tropical climate, which also has an aesthetic value.

You might have read or know from TV shows about ‘secondary skin concept’ or second-layer wall of a building. This concept is originated from an analogy; house as a human skin.
Biologically, human skin has, to protect human from many danger, virus, disease, and other thread outside the human body. Skin has a function to manage a relationship between body and outside the body. For example, if it is too hot, human skin will about them by keeping temperatures stable, for example sweat.
Human also has a way to about them to an external condition for example, by using clothes. There are clothes for hot weather, cold weather, etc.. Clothes can be made to fit our comfort.
In architecture, it is Known The concept of building as human skin, that has a function to protect the human body. Building can be designed, to fit tropical climate, from heat and rain, and from other climate related environmental condition.
‘Secondary skin concept was derived from analogy of human skin and clothes, and this concept can be used whenever one layer of building’ skin ‘is not quite enough to deal with climate impact.

In the above sketch that I made, I describe one concept of secondary skin. Human inside a room is isolated by the Wall and glass. Wood louvers act as ‘secondary skin’ to hold heat direct from the sun to directly enter the room. So in this example, heat will not directly enter the glass wall.

To apply secondary skin at home
To apply secondary skin concept it is important not to be mistaken with creating building ornaments, because usually, house facade will look more aesthetic than using just a single wall.
Many houses and more tropical skin secondary use concept. this is because tropical houses need more advanced concept than just a single wall concept. to apply secondary concept for Your Skin home consider these points;
When designing, observe the surrounding houses. are they comfortable enough? In terms of water freshness. humidity, etc. If you feel that it is not really fresh and comfortable, consider to use secondary skin for your future home.
If your house is already been built, see if there is a possibility that you could better the level of water and natural light comfort by adding secondary skin.
In houses of tropical areas, most secondary skin for buildings are made of wood louvers, steel, or other materials. One unique example is one house that was designed by Ridwan Kamil using bottles as secondary Skin. Other materials like bamboo, recycled materials, glass, etc can be used innovatively
Level of human comfort in tropical areas is quite specific. Consider some rather dark room is comfortable. How much natural light can get in to a room is one of play considerations beside water flow, humidity etc. Nowadays, often ate glass materials being used. The impact is higher temperature levels.
The use of secondary skin is quite similar to being below the shadow of a tree. You can imagine that being under the shadow of trees when the sun shine very hot is very comfortable.
Ethnic architectural style to the home – trends that have the force of the first trend
Interior Design April 26th, 2010
In these modern times, where daily life is much influenced by modern culture, we can listen to a trend that started a lot of architecture present in residential buildings, namely ethnic style trends. In etymology (language), ethnic populations with a common meaning in the culture, the ancestors or certain habits. In this case, ethnic architectural style is to adopt the local culture of Indonesia. These days we often find a house or housing design that carries ‘ethnic style’ as the prime force.
What is ethnic styles?
What trends include ethnic styles? Balinese architectural styles including the popular ethnic styles. This is not surprising, because Bali is a pleasant tourist destination and famous, and have the scenery, resorts and facilities are looking for refreshing many people. Bali always remind us of the resort, recreation, resorts, beaches and virgin forests with unique social life.
Trends in other ethnic styles such as Java-style, as well as local styles such as the home stage of Borneo, Sumatra, Papua and other regions have shapes and special ornaments that can make our home more unique. Trends in ethnic style is already experiencing a shift from the traditional style of the real in our society. If we include modern people with modern lifestyles, we tend to use design with a modern design approach.
What kind of modern design in homes that? Well, first I want to compare it with the traditional home design. Have you recall, you probably never go to a place in the village and visit the house that looks traditional enough? Usually houses still adhere didesa customs in managing the home. Such as the living room to the front, the kitchen should be behind. Marquee welcomed visitors who came to the house. This is called the hierarchy, or sequence of spaces that are always used by homes whose residents still adhere to customs.
The houses are designed with ‘approach’ typically modern hierarchies no longer hold as traditional houses, even the arrangement of the space is free. Spaces constructed only when needed, and there is no obligation placed on the spaces where. The kitchen could be in front, behind the bedroom could own, not the bathroom to hide, even become part of modern lifestyle.
In modern home design; kitchen could be in the front of the house
Because the principle of ‘form follows function’, a cool expressed as a ‘form follow function’ expressed by renowned modern architect Louis Sullivan, the kitchen can be the front house, because the choice of the occupants of the house. Modern lifestyle that requires rapid, practical and functional allows things like; kitchen should be in front. Imagine a situation: for example you are all busy families. The father had to work, her mother worked too, the kids busy school or college. So the morning is the most busy time, and the breakfast had to be made quickly, so that finally placed in front of the kitchen.
This is just one example of how the modern lifestyle now can affect the way we live and ultimately affect the design of our homes. Actually, many other examples, such as starting a lot of people no longer need a living room, because the land the house is narrow and they rarely receive visitors.
Adopting ethnic style in a modern house
Ethnic style later adopted in homes today as a style of architecture, such as ‘Java-style house’, ‘Bali-style house’, and so on. This means; arrangement and design of house plans are still adhering to the needs of modern life (space-space functionally arranged, simple, and follow the requirements), while adopting the style of a traditional house; that a new genre emerged in residential architecture, ie, house ethnic style
Ethnic-themed furniture, which is unique in our house.

Ethnic-themed statues like this can also be a very interesting elements to beautify our homes.

Ethnic style does not have to appear in full in the residence. Many people think; display accessories and ornaments ethnic-themed home decorations also support an ethnic style. For example, we happen to have a minimalist style house, and when we walk in Borneo, we find an ethnic-style statues that seemed interesting. Then we were bought and displayed in our house minimalist, this means we’ve tried to integrate ethnic styles with a modern style. Various accessories and ethnic-style jewelry are now widely seen, such as ethnic-style paintings, statues ethnic theme, such as statues of Java, Asmat statue, and so on. Also fabric elements, such as batik, traditional fabrics can also be used as an accent, for example, put it in place of a painting, or used as a tablecloth, put on the back of the chair as an accent, and so on.
Ethnic style even more profound, can be applied to the ornament or decoration of the house. For example we like ornaments or decorations on a typical wood Sumatra, and then we apply it to the wood of our homes, as in lisplank (wood under the roof), timber on the porch supports, and so on. Ornaments or decorations can be applied more freely.
Conformity with the modern lifestyle
Does ethnic style with modern life? Actually, if we sort out these ethnic styles back from the daily life in the homeland, of course, quite appropriate, we use ethnic style. The reason is because we are still people in Indonesia are proud of our tradition. Shows that we are still ‘the Indonesia’, although we have a modern enough.
Vases like this, which still has a ‘sense of ethnic’ can be combined with the sweet with the modern-style house
(photo; Iyal Fahri, SAMM)
This means we are still happy and has the identity as an Indonesian. Moreover, we do not have to wear ethnic style ‘heavy’ is not it? The things that light-light just as a unique decorative painting themed ethnic or ethnic-themed sculpture could be a very interesting display in a room in our house, like the foyer, living room, bedrooms, and so on.
Selecting Tip Town House
Home Improvement April 26th, 2010
Choosing a town house or home port must be done carefully lest the price was comparable to that obtained satisfaction. For that there are a few tips to keep in mind when going to buy a town house.
1. Observe the location, be sure about the location of the facility is in compliance requirements such as schools, hospitals, and commercial centers.
2. Make sure the environment is safe and does not flood.
3. Usually sold homes pivot, so it is important to consider its development track record.
4. As far as possible be noted also the suitability of building materials used in the early specification. Should ask for a guarantee of at least six months of home warranty from interference leaking, cracking, etc..
5. Make sure that the facilities provided in the town house developer.
6. Make sure the certificate has broken ground. This is to avoid the developer who made the land certificates as collateral in the bank. This is to avoid problems at home behind the name has been paid.
Minimalist Houses
Home Improvement April 26th, 2010
HOUSE minimalist style of architecture is a building that was a trend in the metropolis. Architectural buildings, including houses minimalist, is the choices of architectural form as a result of culture. Not just me-too talkative trends.
MINIMALIST is the pattern of thinking, working, and a way of life. A new way of looking at design as a reflection of how urban life is very practical, lightweight, efficient, and management simplicity.
The house also comes with a minimalist character more clearly (forms and geometric space, simple), better (stronger), and stronger with the spaces blank (a little ornaments and furniture). The simple principle, the quality of design, space, and the resolution of the structure must be getting better. John Pawson is regarded as a teacher “minimalism” to bring home a minimal design lines, the atmosphere is quiet and beautiful.
However, it should be noted too minimalist would be sterile, single-way, and tend to be boring. For that we need to understand together how the development of minimalist home base in the context of our urban culture.
Was always a minimal form of a simple box or there is another form? Minimalist form of house does not always have a simple box, but also the shape of Platonic geometry can be part of the landscape that “suddenly” came up. However, if the house is only necessary form of boxes, the box shape is the result of a process function needs, not because of coercion or talkative follow trends.
The minimum is the ultimate ornament. Minimum a goal in itself and ornaments are simple and pure (simple and pure). Straight lines, flat areas are smooth, sometimes rough, and meeting all of the elbow perpendicular. Blocking mass, materials, lighting, repetition, circulation compact, multifunctional space optimization and sequential.
What type of materials used should be as little as possible? Use of a variety of materials such as wood, brick, stone, glass, exposed concrete, or steel can also appear pure. Exposure to the dominance of certain materials would produce effects different. Design and calculations of detail structure can save the use of materials with the optimum structure.
Resolutions from the floor, walls, doors, windows, vents, skylights, ceiling, up to the roof, with a combination of consistent use of materials. Framework of (concrete, steel), walls (glass, wood, concrete plain / exposure, steel, stone, brick, hebel, brick), doors and windows (wood, metal), stairs (concrete, steel, wood, fiberglass) , skylights (fiberglass), floor (cement, terrazzo, ceramic, marble, parquet), ceiling (plywood, gypsum) or without a ceiling (exposed concrete, exposed steel roof truss, wood) and roof (tile, shingle, steel).
The use of bright colors (red, orange, yellow) in some areas of exposure will strengthen minimalist home accents and make it the focus of the environment.
IS architecture minimalist house was cheap because of the word minimum?
Does it build a minimalist house must be expensive? For young couples or young executives who seek a minimalist house as a symbol of the life of the metropolis, a shortage of funds is clearly a major obstacle.
Minimalist house design features emphasize straightforward, plain, simple, uncomplicated, compact, and space efficiency. Expensive cost of a building is determined by the use of used materials from the proposed design. The cost of building structures generally use a standard market price. Completion of work neatly and carefully requires skilled craftsman power, jelly, and experienced craftsmen making cost above market prices.
Minimalist impression also appears in the attitude of the architect, the client’s approval as a prospective owner of the house, to “voluntarily” reduce many of the requirements are not important. Only the essential functions of the house will be retained only so if the house is impressive minimalist, it is only the result of a process. Not a destination. The beauty of minimalist homes in an optimal place of the purity of the function itself.
Is your home comfortable to live in a minimalist?
Minimalist house would certainly be convenient to live in an urban society the very practical, functional, lightweight, economical, and efficient, because minimalism is the embodiment of their lifestyle, according to the needs of their functions. Symbol of the metropolis lifestyle. A simple way of life in total.
Home furnishings following the basic geometric shape of the building, efficient, and functional course. Structuring a thorough light and artistic (floodlighting, light plant, hanging lamps, garden lamps) makes the house look more artistic minimalist in the evening.
Minimalist houses will continue to grow along with the creativity of architects, design innovation, and support the technology, making appearances minimalist house will always be present with new breakthroughs are fresh, the more perfect the details, and a more affordable price. The presence of minimalist house became the medium of communication between the architecture and landscape in the form of the contrast between the natural and man-made things (culture).
Structuring a minimalist garden will provide the “spirit” softness against the rigidity of the building, violent materials, and harmony of living with shady environment around. The presence of shade trees, lawns, and other shade plants provide fresh and lively atmosphere to fill the “void” minimalist house.
In the end the value of minimalist beauty of the house is no longer rely on ornaments and artificial objects, but it is more meaningful to an honest form, function, and the inspiration that created space. So no wonder if then the house became the choice of minimalist urban communities who longed honesty, simplicity, and innocence.
About the concept of home and healthy interior
Interior Design April 26th, 2010

Maybe a month ago, in an occasion attended a presentation where the majority of the students and employees are housing developers, I’m talking about simple ways to be more responsive home environment. In urban areas, less land, so land prices up which resulted in more and more people trouble to buy a house. Impact; number of occupants in a house to rise as an increase in the number of family members, and other factors are contributing to the natural conditions that have been disrupted.
If at this time we can have a house, it is the grace and luxury that we’re grateful for, especially if the house we live in is a healthy home. What are the elements that should be considered in designing the layout plan and arrangement of space for a healthy home?
The first thing to note is the area of healthy homes, must meet at least basic human needs for healthy activity, in this case means to perform activities normally in the room, not too small or too big. Of course, we still often hear many of our brothers who live in less capable or less worthy condition in which the houses are narrow because of economic factors are less supportive.
According to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI), needs space to house an inmate is 9m2, with a 7.2 m2 threshold. So for example a planned house inhabited by 4 people, then the area should house no less than 36m2. However, we know that the residential area of 36 square meters are occupied by narrow enough for 4 people.
If the home is planned to be added to rooms in the level, do not forget to strengthen the foundation and structural support columns to be built on two levels. This is to avoid the additional costs of having to dismantle the existing construction.
The arrangement of the room can affect our impression of these spaces. Bedroom with bathroom adjacent to a different ‘feel’ when compared with matched dining room. Smart spatial layout in this case including how to activities such as the bathroom does not interfere with the dining room, at least with the distance away.
Spatial planning should also be noted that there are no spaces that poor fresh air, dark, and so on. Avoid corner rooms with a sharp angle because this space is not effective and not in accordance with the general standard of furniture rectangular or round. Connect the ventilation and the windows of each room with a garden front, side or garden in the house for change of air. Spaces that can be linked as living room, family room and dining room does not need to be insulated wall to allow air to flow more freely.
To maximize natural lighting, we should provide windows enough, at least 5% of the room. In addition, the space can be wall paint or finishing material to the atmosphere light bright enough space when opening the window a bit limited.
Spaces that require water such as kitchens, bathrooms, sinks and the like should be grouped in an area adjacent to sanitation is more efficient because the pipes can be incorporated. Similarly, with a bathroom above and below, should be in the same vertical area (the bathroom is a bathroom above the bottom) so that if there is any leakage, simply wet the affected area.
